a twist in the fabric of space

quote for today

"Mathematics is a language of precision; it keeps undefined terms at a minimum; it makes common agreement about the meaning of certain terms (definitions) and the rules of its system (axioms). The discipline strives for both simplicity and for a well-defined domain where the rules operate without contradiction or ambiguity." - J. Allen Howard

quote of the day

"Music makes time audible, and its form and continuity sensible."

loop assassins - just visiting [2006] (2009 re-visit)

This is a live 95% vinyl mix. I played records for the first 20 or so minutes, then Boompsie spun the next 20 or so minutes, and then what follows is both of us playing simultaneously on four turntables plus a cd player all running through multiple effects processors of which we modified their parameters in real-time. I recently re-edited a new ending by adding a recording of Boompsie telling a story and then I mixed in a Loop Assassins demo track that I recently created from bits and pieces of loops and sounds that Sherry and I came up with while experimenting with some analog gear the last time we worked on music together before she moved to Wisconsin.

billy collins' introduction to poetry

Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins

I ask them to take a poem
and hold it up to the light
like a color slide

or press an ear against its hive.

I say drop a mouse into a poem
and watch him probe his way out,

or walk inside the poem's room
and feel the walls for a light switch.

I want them to waterski
across the surface of a poem
waving at the author's name on the shore.

But all they want to do
is tie the poem to a chair with rope
and torture a confession out of it.

They begin beating it with a hose
to find out what it really means.

twitter and haikus

So I obviously joined the Twitter after reading a Rolling Stone article about some famous musicians who Twitter, and specifically found Yoko Ono's tweet inspiring:

“Every single person is incredible. Like an oasis. You can either irrigate the oasis or get very bad water, it’s just up to you.”

“I think it's better to dance than to march through life.”

Vinnie G.'s twitters were the first friend tweets that I read and they were in haiku form. Add to that the fact that Dionne has been writing haiku movie reviews on her blog... so being not-so-original, I decided to try my hand at the haiku form and thus I have found a channel for these through my Twitter account. Enjoy.

Now I am connecting with haiku afficianados and writers on Twitter. Found this one tonight and it is amazing:

A giant firefly:
that way, this way, that way, this
and it passes by.

- Kobayashi Issa
