mbm sample origin: vintage chanel ad

Electronic breakbeat/sample masters Meat Beat Manifesto incorporated the audio from this commercial in their 1990 LP "Satyricon." The album is one of my favorite albums ever, so it was really cool to find the actual commercial.

may the force be crispy, and topped with butter and stuff

I'm still in disbelief that I failed to find a box with one of these inside of it on Christmas morning. Damn, Santa, don't you remember how many of my childhood afternoons were spent creating ultra-violent soap operas using my bookcase as a giant space station for my Star Wars action figures? One of these days I hope to watch the computer animated Clone Wars series on Cartoon Network from the beginning. I keep catching bits and pieces of it, but it's a serial thing so I'll have to start from the beginning and hope to Yoda that it's not as bad as The Phantom Menace.

MC: What more can you say?

strictly for the househeads

Attention househeads. Go directly to the Strictly Rhythm website and join their mailing list. Once you join, you'll get exclusive access to their DJ mixes which currently include heavy hitters like Todd Terry, Osunlade, Quentin Harris, and 'Little' Louis Vega among others. Not a bad deal for a free membership! Thank me later. You can also purchase much if not all of the Strictly Rhythm back catalog (in digital download format or on vinyl(!!!)), as well as other merchandise. Strictly Rhythm if you were sleeping through the 1990's is the legendary power"house" and arguably the most important and most influential house music label in the U.S. if not the world. If anyone's interested in shopping for an early graduation/birthday gift for me (I mean, c'mon, May is really not that far away!) the grey t-shirt in the merchandise section would be the perfect gift idea. I'd probably never take it off.

Anyhow, you can't go wrong with a label boasting tracks from house heavy hitters such as Masters at Work, Roy Davis, Jr., Kings of Tomorrow, Maurice Joshua, George Morel, Armand Van Helden, Mood 2 Swing, Osunlade, DJ Sneak, DJ Pierre, Barbara Tucker, Crystal Waters, King Britt, Josh Wink, Roger Sanchez, Joey Negro, David Morales, and Todd Terry to name a few.

If you need a refresher of the Strictly Rhythm sound:

Aly-us - Follow Me
Harddrive - Deep Inside
Harddrive - Just Believe (Tony Humphries mix)
Essence - Moments in House
The Untouchables - Dance to the Rhythm
Sun, Sun, Sun - Curious
Tech Nine - Slam Jam
Circle Children - Zulu (Change mix)
Circle Children - Mamba Mamba
Hardhead - New York Express
CLS - Can You Feel It
George Morel - Let's Groove
DJ Pierre - Love Trax
DJ Pierre - Love Izz
DJ Sneak - Keep on Groovin' (Ian Pooley mix)
Wink - Higher State of Consciousness (Tweekin Acid Funk mix)
Endangered Species - Ping Pong
Lou^2 - Freaky (Bar Heads mix 1995)
Black Orchid - Baby Baby
Club Ultimate - Carnival '93
Afro Cube - Muevete Mama

this is the jam

I cannot get this out of heavy rotation, no matter what I try to do. I just keep going back to it. Roy Ayers and big phat breakbeats are a match made in heaven.
Methinks everybody must love Roy and sunshine and big phatty breakbeats, and so everybody must listen to this effin' brilliant track:

THC - Sunshine [Awesome Records, 1993]

and here's the original goodness:
Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine

audio deja vu

Tonight's action-packed Winter premiere of the FX network's plastic surgeon drama Nip/Tuck was great for many reasons, one being the hot tunes included in the episode. They featured The O'Jays' "Back Stabbers" as well as Mark Ronson's cover of The Smiths' "Stop Me If You Think You Heard This One Before." So, I was looking into cover versions of songs online and found a site dedicated to archiving a database of cover songs. Check out Secondhand Songs if you're interested in who covered a certain song or who did the original version.
