70s selections by stout and jim

StoutXTC's picks for 70s grooves (including Stout's commentary):

Amusement Park- Groove Your Blues Away circa 1982. (No samples used to my recollection...just one of those songs that I warped into the ground as a kid and is still timeless)...

Faze O- Riding High circa 1975. This song has been on a phethora of comp Cds and is one of those obscure little jams that have been confused with Kool n The Gang or The Isley me its just backdrop groove from a late night dancefloor, looking at a summer sunset...or sunrise with that special someone...groovin'.

The Blackbyrds- Rock Creek Park circa 1975. Although Donald Byrd is known mostly within the jazz community, with his side group the Blackbyrds, is showing their versatility by spreading there wings and flying off in other directions. Now while certain jams remind you that you want to take it easy with that special someone, this is simply one of those jams that you drop at the right moment when you want the party to kick it up a couple of notches!!!

The Love Commitee- Just As Long As I Got You circa 1978. This old school classic racked my brain for almost 4 years until Doc Martin put me out of my misery. He and Lilla(Vocalist) reworked the track into a house/bossa diddy and from the instant I heard it I knew it was something old school but I couldn't place it...I asked family members and everything too but no one had an answer for me...Thanks Doc!

Minnie Riperton- Inside My Love circa 1975. (Sample used in Kenny Dope Project "Get On Down" along with a couple of other hip hop and house tracks)...I'd forgotten a lot of the tracks mainly due to the fact that you mostly heard "Lovin You" after her passing in 1979 but luckily I started diggin around. Check out the live performance of this timeless talent...

Patrice Rushen- Haven't You Heard circa 1979. (Sampled in the 1999 underground track "I Feel Good Things For You" by Daddy's Favorite). Now I have to admit that I didn't initially give her the credit she was due...mainly because I only remembered her early 80's hit "Forget Me Nots" but between this track and "Number One" that have been sampled over and again I simply stand corrected and I'm now all about her praise.

Machine- There But For the Grace of God There Go I circa 1978. This little known classic survived the years by being put in movies and their soundtracks and put on compilations. There was even a rework of the track to play for underground use some 5 or 6 years back...amazing how the lyrics of this track holds true for many of us in this society in its present. A reminder of how far we still have to go...

Teena Marie- Square Biz circa 1981. (sampled quite a bit in the hip hop world...I think the last person that used it was Foxy Brown). Now I could've this song was earlier than that but this little gem put her square in the middle of some serious soul! No one questioned her ethnicity even after she was shown on television!! Her voice, collabs and body of work continues to stand and speak volumes!!! Ghetto pass 4 Life...

Diana Ross- Love Hangover circa 1979. Ok, now IMO if you're going to do any type of disco party, you have to have your dj play Donna Summer or Diana Ross...period! If you don't have either then there is NO disco let alone a party...and since this is my list I had to go with my ultimate favorite disco song ever!!!

Watch Diana Ross perform Love Hangover here.

O'Bryan - Soul Train's a Comin' circa 1983. O'Bryan was one of those artists that fell by the wasteside by 1985 but before that he was on his way with hits like "Just A Gigolo" and this one time revamp title song for the Soul Train TV series to ring in the new era of the 80's R & B stylee! I couldn't resist especially since this was one of the baddest TV themes to have ever hit video screen!!! You know you was dancin on Saturday morning/afternoon/night/whenever the tv station in yo neck of the woods decided to put the show on!

Jim's picks for 70s grooves:

Idris Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (1977)

Giorgio Moroder - From Here To Eternity 7" Mix (1977)

Instant Funk - I Got My Mind Made Up (1978)

Needa - Come On And Rock 12" Mix (1979)

Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes - Wake Up Everybody (1975)

Salsoul Orchestra - The Chicago Bus Stop (1976)

Skyy - First Time Around (Original Larry Levan 12 Inch Mix) (1979)

Boogie Motion - Boris Midney/Beautiful Bend (1978)

Brick - Dazz (Looong Version) (1976)

Orlando Riva Sound - Moon Boots (Original Full 12" Version) (1977)

And here are some tracks from the 1980s that Jim has been listening to:

A Number Of Names - Sharevari (1981)

Charlie - Spacer Woman (12" Vocal) (1983)

Valerie Dore - Get Closer (1984)

Raw Silk - Do It To The Music (1982)

a little funk for your soul

Last January I asked a group of disc jockeys to send me a list of their top songs released during the previous year... and I posted them. This time for something different as an end-of-the-year-music-picks theme, I'm going to compile people's favorite ten or so disco, funk, soul, and/or rare groove tracks from the 1970's. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable New Year! Here's my list for starters, in order of release year.

(The following links will direct you to YouTube "videos" of the songs.)

Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out (1971)

Donny Hathaway - Magnificent Sanctuary Band (1971)

Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa (1973)

Harvey Mason - Hop Scotch (1975)

Brass Construction - Changin' (1975)

Eddie Henderson - Inside You (1975)

Isley Brothers - For the Love of You (1975)

Double Exposure - My Love is Free (1976)

Bozz Scaggs - Low Down (1976)

Crown Heights Affair - Far Out (1976)

Erotic Drum Band - Action 78 (1978)

George Duke - I Want You for Myself (1979)

...and as a bonus here's a few gems from the early 80s to check out:

Unlimited Touch - I Hear Music in the Street (1980)

Gino Soccio - Try It Out (1981)

The Nick Straker Band - A Little Bit of Jazz (1981)

Montana Sextet - Heavy Vibes (1982)

New Jersey Connection - Love Don't Come Easy (1982)

surfin' usa

Okay, so these Xbox 360 "Live Your Moment" commercials are pretty cool, but I think the music is even cooler, being a closet surf music freak. I've been trying to figure out for the past few months who made this song. So, what is the song in this commercial?

Some sites and forums mention these guys that make music for commercial projects called Robot Repair, but so far there's no word on the name of the song if there is one, and I'm not sure if they actual composed and performed the tune in this specific commercial, or just some of the other commercials in the series. Anyhow, if you ever are wondering about a song in a commercial it looks like is the site you want to check out.

rick wilhite - live in miami

Rick Wilhite - Live @ Affiliated Vibes | The Office, Miami | March 29, 2008

This mixed set by one of Detroit's oldschool masters, Rick "The Godson" Wilhite, has been my unofficial soundtrack to 2008. It's still my current heavy-rotation "around the house" chillin' and relaxin' background music to my life in its current incarnation. The realness drops in around the eleven minute mark and it just keeps getting deeper and more incredibly, housily vomitous thereafter. Warning: this is authentic Detroit-flavored house music, so please make sure you are mentally, spiritually, and psychologically prepared to handle these subterranean grooves. This will move your feet and/or your soul.

dancin' in the streets '08

One more time around the BLOCK!
1 pm - 10pm.

Clifton Blvd. between W117th and W116th.

Thanks to the efforts of community members, Dancin’ in the Streets will return for its 24th year. Recognizing that the spread of AIDS continues to impact our region, this group of volunteers has stepped up to continue this day of fun and fundraising.

Though not an official AIDS Taskforce event, all proceeds from Dancin’ in the Streets still benefit the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland, Northeast Ohio’s largest provider of HIV/AIDS prevention, education, treatment and advocacy.

The street will be blocked off, there will be plenty of dancing, and there will be VENDORS, INFORMATION, DRINKS & MORE. (Yes, beer trucks and liquor are allowed in the streets for this). This features a tight sound system, it's outdoors, and a lot of fun.

Advance admission is $20, and the day of the event it is $25.

Advance Sale Tickets now on sale at Twist, Club Cleveland, and AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland.

1:00 Doug Burkhart
2:00 Dwreck
3:00 Dj Debi
4:15 Jerry Szoka
5:30 Rob Black
6:45 Bob Ganem
8:00: Robin Harris

This year Twist will be piping in the outside sound so as not to create a soundclash and provide an enjoyable environment.

This event originated in Downtown Cleveland (I believe on w9th outside Detour) many many years ago. As it was explained to me, this was an event started in response to a popular community member's need for financial support in his struggle with "this new thing" called AIDS. 2004 was the last year that Aids Task Force hosted the event, and it was to be the last year for it, but for the past four years, community members got together to revive the event and raise money for the AIDS Task force and take it back to its roots..

haagen-dazs cares about bees

Cheers to the Haagen-Dazs ice cream company for donating lots of money to help researchers investigate the reasons behind Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) that is affecting beehives worldwide.

"the company announced the donation of $250,000 to Pennsylvania State University and University of California, Davis to help research the bee colony collapse disorder (CCD) phenomenon. The company will also sell a limited-edition flavor, Vanilla Honey Bee, with part of the proceeds also going to fund research on CCD"

an open letter to the woman who...

An open letter to the woman who let her boyfriend take her to Mr. Hero on Valentine's Day,

Wow. You have a classy guy there, don't you, woman who let her boyfriend take her to Mr. Hero on Valentine's Day? I'm so jealous of the depth of your relationship that likely bloomed over whiskey shots and a well-rehearsed cheap pick up line just a few hours earlier. I overheard that the two of you got drunk off your asses at the neighborhood bar across the street, aptly named "Knuckleheads," while I was standing in line behind you trying to avoid watching the two of your white trash asses sticking your tongues down each other's throats and groping each other while in line at the freaking Mr. Hero... on Valentine's Day. I just wanted to order a Romanburger, I didn't want to watch a hillbilly re-enactment of Caligula. You two deserve each other. Really. Did I seriously hear the sweet sounds of En Vogue crooning "What a Man" pouring down from the tiny speakers hidden in the ceiling, or was I dreaming? How appropriately ironic. Who would have thought that Cupid would make a surprise appearance at the Mr. Hero of all places? Oh, what a wonderful world, indeed. I can only pray and hope to God that the two of you sorry excuses for human beings use condoms tonight and every time thereafter. I beg of you to get on The Pill if you're already not, but it might not matter since your sleezebag boyfriend's sperm count was probably destroyed long ago from smoking too much marijuana. Mr. Hero is among the least romantic places I can think of, and it's definitely not a make out spot, woman who let her boyfriend take her to Mr. Hero on Valentine's Day. But, all things considered, I forgive you because, really, who doesn't get a little turned on by a hot buttered cheese steak and criss cross potato thingies that you can dip in a small plastic container of gooey cheddar?

you know what blog i like, like so much?

There are no people currently on the planet that I know personally who can bring on the "Hateraid" like Dionne and Amy can. Let 'em have it, ladies! If "bitter, jaded, and sarcastic" is in the water supply in Cleveland, then they must be putting "hate, irritation, and oh, like, so over it!" in the public water system in Los Angeles. So check out You Know What I Hate, Like So Much? to get your fix of sophisticated and hilarious bitching and moaning.

dancing in the ether

My heart and condolences go out to SAFMOD and the friends and family of Zoe Schultz, executive director, choreographer, dancer, and simply an amazing person who will be sorely missed. I met Zoe through photographer Heather Posten a few years ago when Heather asked me to work on a 16mm black and white film project for one of our film classes at Cleveland State. The film entitled "Sisters" is about four minutes of Zoe and her sister Hope dancing in the SAFMOD studio at the Hodge School on Cleveland's East Side to "Emojoe" an instrumental tune by an amazing multimedia local group Infinite Number of Sounds. Since that project I've had the pleasure of working with Zoe and the rest of SAFMOD on a number of projects as videographer for their performances at MOCA and Cleveland Public Theater. Zoe was one of the most loving, sensitive, and creative people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. She radiated wisdom and was always down to Earth. Her passing this past Saturday is truly a tragedy, and it's hard for me to even try to put into words what the world has just lost. There really just aren't words. Words aren't good enough. Zoe, I love you and will miss you.

what's that song?

Can't figure out the track ID to a certain song that's been stuck in your head or on your favorite mix tape? Help is on the way. Look no further than watzatsong. You can register for free and then upload a short clip of the song in question and then other members will inform you as to what your mystery song is. This is great, but it is highly member-dependent, which has been a problem I've noticed on message boards- most people don't really take the time to actually listen to your mystery songs and help you out. I haven't tried watzatsong yet, but I have a few tracks in mind that I've been wondering for years if anyone will know what they are, although they are probably obscure since they are on Chicago house DJ mixed cassettes from the early 90's. I'll let you know how the response goes on watzatsong, but I'm hopeful since they actually post a counter on how long it took for someone to respond to track ID requests. This is very cool, but again, it depends on us all to join and actually listen to songs and help each other out.

stone roses - i am the resurrection (remix)

This is dedicated to Dionne, since she shares my love of The Stone Roses' eponymous first album (but I think she agrees with me that their second album bit the big one). This isn't the best remix, but I found it on a music blog today and thought it was worth posting as a shout out to D, since she's experiencing all that "cold" weather out in Los Angeles (insert rolling eyes here). D, the wind chill was well below zero in these parts this weekend, so you'll get no sympathy from your friends and family in the Midwest. Hopefully this re-edit of the Stone Roses' "I Am The Resurrection" will warm you up, though.

the mccoys - hang on sloopy (mta hai karate remix)

This played-out (decades-long played-out, to be more accurate) sports anthem is given a new spin, for the better. If anyone knows if this reworked version of The McCoys' "Hang on Sloopy" is available on vinyl or will be released on vinyl anytime in the near future let me know as soon as possible before it gets played out once again in this incarnation on my iTunes.

my documentary

For my film making class I have to produce, write, film, direct, score, and edit my own short film by May of 2008 and I have finally settled on a subject for my documentary. I'm going to do it on the dying bee populations in the U.S. and the reasons why they are dwindling. If anyone knows any beekeepers in the Midwest or any scientists anywhere who are researching this subject please contact me ASAP. Thanks.

shame, shame, shame

I'm Withdrawing My Support of Ron Paul's Candidacy
I agree with the author of the above link due to racist and homophobic remarks printed in Mr. Paul's newsletter, so I'm recrossing the blue-red line and can't decide between Obama and Hilary. The decision would have been a lot clearer in my mind before Monday when Hilary actually showed the world that she's not a robot. We still have some time to decide until the Ohio primary, though. I urge everyone to vote in the primary elections, as this is just as important as voting in November.

tek-know's big rig

The legendary Dan Bell will be coming to Akron this Friday 1.11.08 on 29,000 watts of sonic goodness! Bring earplugs and prepare for face melting.

Daniel Bell is considered to be one of the pioneers of the minimal techno genre. Born in Sacramento, California, Bell grew up outside of Toronto, and later moved to Detroit where he collaborated with Richie Hawtin as Cybersonik for three years on Plus 8 records. In 1991, he started his own label, Accelerate, where he released a string of extremely influential releases as DBX. Bell was influenced primarily by Chicago House as well as the works of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His productions are characterized by minimalist house grooves accented by blips and bleeps. Some tracks also feature bizarre voice effects and eerie atmospherics such as "Losing Control," which caused a sensation when released in 1994. In the mid to late 90's Bell moved behind the scenes to create 7th City Distribution. He also launched Elevate, Harmonie Park and relaunched 7th City Records. In 2000, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, and released his first mixed CD, "The Button-Down Mind of Daniel Bell," on Tresor Records to wide critical acclaim. 2003 brought a follow-up release on Logistic records, "The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back," and soon after a retrospective CD of older work was released: "Blip, Blurp, Bleep: The Music of Daniel Bell". For the past few years Dan has kept a heavy DJ schedule that has taken him all over the world. In 2007, he took a step back from DJing to focus on production and developing a live show that he's finally taking to the road.

the future light show

Now that Heroes is on hiatus, The Future Light Show on Dogglounge is what I look forward to on Mondays. Check out the deep house sounds of Jason Soditch, resident DJ at Black Market Fridays at Touch Supper Club and the monthly Get Groove (also featuring Marc Cotterell [FM Music | Night Drive Music : UK] and Jayme O'Brien [Section 8 : Cleveland]) at Twist Social Club. Jason most notably was a resident at the legendary The End Up (as it's been explained to me in the past "because that's where everyone ends up for afterhours") in San Francisco. You can catch The Future Light Show on Dogglounge each and every Monday afternoon from 2-4pm EST. Click the title link to visit the Dogglounge.
