househeads anonymous

These are the Twelve Steps to House as defined by Househeads Anonymous:1. We admitted we were powerless over House—that our lives had become unmanageable without it.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity... namely House music.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of Jack as we understood Him and his Box.
4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our Vinyl Crates.5. Admitted to Jack, to ourselves, and to other dancers the exact nature of our love for House Beats.
6. Were entirely ready to have Jack remove all bad music from our lives.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shyness and let our freak flag fly on the dancefloor.
8. Made a list of all House DJs we had missed, and became willing to make it to their next show.
9. Made direct amends to dance wherever possible, except when to do so would injure other dancers like in a breakdancing circle or something.10. Continued to take personal inventory of our past favorite fly-by-night genres and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through dancing and spinning to improve our conscious contact with Jack as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His Will for us and the power to dance like a silly goose.12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to non-househeads, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

brushes with greatness: patti smith
Okay, so here's my kick ass story about the Patti Smith concert at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of yesterday's The Early Show on CBS. I wake up at 3:30am and get down to the Rock Hall at 5am... well, I think I was actually a few minutes late for work as usual, but seeing as the other production assistants didn't show up yet, nobody noticed. So somewhere around 5:30am I take this big bag of garbage from the stage area in front of the Rock Hall down to the back loading dock. Mind you, it's absolutely pouring rain and totally dark, especially behind the Rock Hall. So, I'm standing in the back with this huge bag of garbage over my shoulder and up pulls this big black limousine. I look around and notice that I'm the only one in that area of the Rock Hall grounds. Out of the limo comes the driver and then Patti's assistant, and then the rock legend herself pops out of the backseat. She gets out wearing her signature little black hat and she looks around and then looks at me and then says, "Hello! Good morning." I said, "Hello," and just thought to myself: how cool is that that this gritty folk punk rock superstar would actually say hello to a guy carrying a huge bag of garbage in the pouring rain at 5:30am? I love her forever now.I Tivo-ed all the CBS morning shows yesterday, because I figured I'd be running around in the background somewhere, and sure enough during the 5:30am-6am show I was doing just that.
Anyhow, after her mini-concert she gets off the stage and goes behind the stage and steps on one of these big dolly's that the stagehands use to compile and move all the big pieces of the stage. Patti doesn't notice or care that this giant dolly is on wheels. So, she climbs onto this thing to greet people and sign autographs and have her picture taken by amateur photographers and the press, so I realize this platform she's on could possibly start to roll away or at worst she could get hurt, so I'm bracing the dolly and locking it with my arms together with one of the metal bike-rack-looking crowd barrier things. I'm like a foot away from her and she says hello again to me, not realizing I'm making sure she's safe from harm's way and I notice this guy with no legs in a wheelchair. Well, actually, during the concert I was asking people to move out of his way so he could see... including some woman in a suit who looked at me with a death look and then proceeded to enter the VIP area to show me how special she was. In any event, the guy in the wheelchair was clutching a black and white promo photograph of Patti and a Sharpie. So, after she was done with giving autographs she announces to the crowd that she has to leave. I say, "Excuse me, Patti... but can you sign this guy in the wheelchair's photo?" And she's like, "Of course, Honey." And she goes over to him and they talk for a minute and she asks what his name is so that she can personalize the autograph. And he says, "Well, today is my birthday, so can you write Happy Birthday?" She does him one better. She signs the photograph and then proceeds to sing him the Happy Birthday song. He was glowing.
Patti Smith is a class act. I give her major props for being such an awesome person.
So, again, I Tivo-ed the CBS Early Show and was so excited that my film teacher, Cindy Penter, and her husband Gordon, and her friend Frank were filmed in the crowd like at least three times. Here's a still:

aminals at doubting thomas
Aminals -- As art exhibits go, this one's pretty wild -- or at least undomesticated. Pretension and polish are nowhere to be found in this offbeat, animal-themed collection of works by local artists, organized by Clevelander Shawn Mishak. Depth too is scarce, but at least there's an intellectual path through the zoo: that we humans aren't much different from our beastly neighbors. Josh Banaszak draws the connection most clearly in "Pregnant." Painting crudely on untreated plywood, he depicts a nude, pregnant woman in profile, neck to stomach. Her breasts and belly are swollen to bursting, but the pink circle representing her womb is what grabs your attention. Scrawled over it is the word "mammalian," making the point that gestation and live birth are traits common to countless species. Mandy Szostek illustrates our remove from nature and pays sarcastic homage to our media obsession in "Modern Urban Totemic Animism," a totem pole-like structure formed from televisions. But the real zingers are the charms on the wall: Instead of statuettes, there are a cigarette box, a prescription-pill container, and a Red Bull can -- gods, indeed. Jeff Pasek takes the most poetic tack, seeking animal equivalents for human tendencies. One discovery is "Sleep Cycle," the show's most beautiful painting, in which monarch butterflies, stuck in a treeless, orange-tinted landscape, find rest in dangling from mysterious white lines. They can't sleep without a little external assistance, and neither can most of us. Until August 13 at Doubting Thomas Gallery, 856 Jefferson Avenue, Cleveland, 330-687-3355. -- Zachary Lewis
bear essentials: review of aminals art show
Bear Essentials
A bunchy of party animals take over an art gallery.
By Cris GlaserThe display’s centerpiece consists of a 5-foot-10-inch plastic teddy bear stuffed with an assortment of miniature bears, which Mishak purchased at various shops around town. “If I had had more money, I would have ordered the same size and color,” he says. “But I’m tickled how it turned out.” Nearby, filmmaker Mandy Szostek’s totem pole is made of TVs that simultaneously screen creature features, while Robert Ritchie contributes handmade earrings shaped like chicken feet. Patrons can also check out a documentary about aquatic life -- which features Mishak’s droll narration. The exhibit includes plenty of paintings of animals in atypical settings -- like a dodo bird nursing a beer and a zebra sitting on a toilet, perusing a newspaper. “It’s my immaturity,” says Mishak. “I tend to drift toward ridiculous, conceptual stuff.”

Tek-Know presents
3 Channels (Poland)
$5 18+
Touch Supper Club
2710 Lorain Ave
Cleveland, Ohio 44113

3 Channels are Deeop (Grzegorz Demianczuk) and Ketiov (Wojciech Taranczuk). Their acquaintance began in 2003 when Ketiov started to spin his first records in clubs like Sonar and Taras Caffe and Deeop was already widely known for his enormous records collection and participation in every party in the city of Stettin.
In late 2003 they organized their first mutual party at Mezzoforte club, which appeared to be a huge success. Logically the became resident dj's there, which gave them a chance to organize their own parties simply named "Electronic House". The idea was to promote new dance music completely different from what was played in most of the polish clubs at the time. The "Electronic House" parties had the privilege to welcome such people as: Tom Clark, Dub Taylor, John Tejada, Antonelli Electr, Wighnomy Brothers, Todd Bodine, Matthias Tanzmann and Duplex 100.
In September 2003 they broadcasted their first radio show called "Session" at the local ABC Radio alongside with their old mate Vitek. After a year "Session" evolved into the 3 Channels project. Later the radio show was broadcasted under the name of "Plastelina" and could be heard ever Thursday from 6 pm to 7 pm. "Plastelina" has no sound limits and has one goal, which is to promote modern electronic music from down tempo to electronic, tech-house or techno music.
After half a year of co-operation with Votchik 3 channels decided to star producing... They released their 2 first records on Trenton ("Split EP" and "Superficial") then followed by 1 EP on each Trapez and Crosstown Rebel which showed a more minimal side of their work!
All these releases showed that 3 Channels could be versatile artists and collected a lot of good reviews all over the world on medias like BBC or the popular Anjas Schneider's radio show "Dance Under The Blue Moon"... They are now starting to do remixes for people such as Jacek Sienkiewicz, Maetrik, Richard Bartz, Codec'n Flexor and are releasing new productions on labels like Trenton, Crosstown Rebels, Trapez and Resopal.

Part of the monthly Tremont Art Walk, Doubting Thomas' opening this past Friday included a video/sculpture piece entitled "Modern Urban Totemic Animism," a collaboration between Mandy (pictured), composer Craig Bourne (pictured), videographer Eric Wahl, and myself. We made a TV totem pole, showing different video pieces we made in each of the five televisions. Mandy also included some jewelry with found objects, some paintings on a mirror, a furbee wearing an amulet of the urbilataria, or the common ancestor, also known as an ancient worm. The whole piece was surrounded by a big pile of feathers scattered all around. The entire show at the gallery is "Animals." It will be showing for the next few weeks, so please try and stop down to Doubting Thomas.view the complete photo album here:

There's two reviews about the show in this week's issue of Scene Magazine and online that mention Mandy and the TV totem pole.

blog alert: art addict
You might be familiar with Valerie Tyler if you've clicked through the links on the left side of this page (these do not appear if you're reading the feedburner version: through the link on myspace, or if you clicked my sig line on the cnl). Valerie's is the last (because I have them in alphabetical order) but definitely not least. I got to see her jewelry designs in person at her booth during the Clifton Arts Festival and I was very impressed at the amount and quality of her work. Her presentation was also very professional. You'd think she's been doing this forever as a full-time job or something. Well, she recently started an art blog, and although she's told me about it, I really didn't remember to check it out until today, and again, I'm highly impressed! Check it out yourself here: http://artaddict.wordpress.com/

40 days to find my purpose in life
Do everything in life with all the passion of your soul.
Always play naked in the rain.
Never end the question.
Never question the end.
But, Jeff remembers them as:
Do everything with all the Energy and Passion your Aura has to offer.
Always run naked in the rain.
Never end the Question.
Never question the End.
And there are one or two other ones that we cannot remember at this time. Maybe we never will. So, in any event... I've thought about those rules for the past six years and tried to apply them to my life wherever possible. So, the other day I'm at my uncle Bob's wake (he, my father's youngest brother, died of pancreatic cancer quite suddenly at the age of 53) and my aunt starts talking to me about the Bible and she shared with me that Galatians quote that I posted a few days ago. And then on Friday morning, we had the funeral mass, which was the first time I'd been to church in quite a while and it was extra comforting since it was held at St. Francis de Sales... the church that I had attended, read the readings at, and been an altar boy at during grade school. I felt extremely honored to be asked by my dad and Aunt Ruthanne to be a pall bearer. After the funeral, our family met at a local restaurant and while we were about to leave after lunch, my Aunt Anne was handing out multiple copies of this book, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. She asked that after we read it, we sign our name on the inside of the book cover and pass it on to another family member and ask them to do the same. I thought, what a sweet idea. Then, at future family gatherings and holidays we'll have something else to talk about and we'll hopefully all be on more of the same "page," if you will (excuse my awful attempt at humor, it doesn't get much deeper than puns I'm sorry to divulge.) So, this book is pretty cool, although the religiousness is a bit overbearing or at least heavy-handed at times, but heck, if it'll help me figure out some of this thing called life, then I'm all about it. You're supposed to read one chapter a day and reflect on it all day. It's supposed to help you find the purpose of your life. Sounds good to me, actually, since I've been wondering what this whole thing (my life) was about for quite some years now. I've found an online copy, so if you want to check it out, Google "The Purpose Driven Life" and click the first link (the one with books.google.com in the URL). I'll let you know what I think about this whole thing (the book) in about 38 more days.
